Generally my style of onion chutney for idly or dosai is very different ! i add little channa dal and garlic which has different flavor I prepared somewhat my husband didnt like it ! so give up the idea ! when i read the cook book ! it has MADRAS ONION CHUTNEY ! because of the name i tried it was super duper infact he liked it very much ! one more point ! it will well go with Thachi mamu (CURD RICE)
Onion – 3 medium size
Red chilly – 2 nos
green chilly – 3 nos
Urad dal – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Tamarind – a pinch
salt -as required
Oil – 1tbsp
curry leaves – to temper
Heat the kadai and pour the oil once heat add the mustard seeds once cracked add the urad dal
green chilly and red chilly saute till it turns semi brown ! transfer the mixture in to plate !
Again add the chopped onion in the rest of the oil saute till it turns brown ! off the flame add the tamarind and salt , once cooled down add the urad dal, mustard ,red and green chilly , grind it coarsely , then add the sauteed onion and tamarind and grind it smoothly adjust salt !
if needed u can temper with curry leaves or coriander !
I never tasted this type of chutney in chennai 🙂 but do not know why the cook book has this name !
- Adjust the chilly according to your taste !
- Actual recipe calls for little sugar but i am scared to add did nt add if u like go head ! and let me know the taste!
- Make sure u are not burning the urad dal !
