My husband is just opposite to me (he should be )he always opt for Sambhar , So whenever he we go out if we order idly he says Do not keep Chutney in my plate instead keep me two cups of sambhar ! He likes to mix with sambhar (in proper tamil Kozhachi adikarthu ), infact he ask one more cup 🙂 One of the best combo he says ! But very rarely i make the tiffin sambhar , Yes it has a difference from regular one ! Since we are two so i do not want to waste ! also we do not like this sambhar to take with Rice
This week my parents visited So i got the opportunity to make the Tiffin sambhar! Here it goes my version !
Check out my Saravana bhavan Sambhar version too !
To saute and Grind
Oil – 1tbsp
Onion – 1 large finely chopped
Pepper – 1 tsp
Jeera – 1 tsp
Red chilly – 3 nos
Coconut – 1/4 cup (shredded or grated)(optional for sauteing)
Corainder leaves – 1/2 cup finely chopped (optional for sauteing)
Boiled and smashed toor dal – 1 cup (add the turmeric and hing while boiling )
Onion – 1 medium finely chopped
Mustard seeds – 1 tbsp
Curry leaves – to temper
ghee or Coconut oil – 1 tbsp
Normal oil – 1 tsp
Salt – as required
Sambhar powder – 1 tbsp (check out my sambhar powder )
Heat the kadai and pour the oil and add the ingredients given under ” To saute and Grind” ,
Saute well and once onion turns to semi brown off the flame and allow to cool
once cooled grind it nicely !
Again heat the Kadai and add the Ghee and oil mixture , once heat add the mustard seeds once cracked add the onion and saute till it changes it colors , Then add the Grinded onion coriander paste ! and adjust little water ! allow it to boil so that the raw flavor goes (if the coconut and coriander is not sauted ), Then add the sambhar powder and salt !Again adjust little water to get the desired consistency!
Once boiled add the smashed dal ! make the desired and required consistency by adding the little water ! leti it boil for some time ! finely temper with curry leaves ! serve hot with Idly or dosai ( learn how to make soft idily’s)
- I have used the fresh coriander ,so the flavor is just awesome alternatively you can use the coriander seeds too ! But you need to saute the seeds in the oil !
- I have not used the Tomato and Tamarind water as i do not want the tangy taste in tiffin sambhar , if needed you can use the same !
- Adjust the spiciness according to the family taste ! because we are adding the Red chilly as well as Sambhar powder !
- As we are using coconut the shell life is less so plan it accordingly
