After my marriage my husband does not have a habit of taking curd along with idly or dosai , then one fine day i prepared for myself and the entire plate was finished by him , Then on wards i started preparing dahi idly, Its quite easy and filling too. Recently i got my mini idly plate and become addictive to that idly, be it podi idly, sambhar idly or dahi idly its very tasty and loved the cute mini idly shape,
I generally make my own batter very rare case i get the batter outside, otherwise every week i wipe my batter in a large vessel . So go on try this dahi idly for your kids evening snack i am sure u are the winner.
Mini Idly – 12 to 14 ( to know the idly batter proportion click here for the recipe )
Thick – 1/2 cup
Thin Curd – 1/2 cup
salt – as required
Oil – 1tbsp
Onion – 1/2 cup finely chopped
Green Chilly – 1 nos
red chilly powder – 1tsp
Turmeric powder – 1tsp
Curry leaves or coriander leaves – To Garnish
Mustard seeds – 1tsp
Urad dal – 1 tsp
steam the Idly in the mini idly pan and get ready with the steamed idly, If you do not have mini idly pan not to worry just steam the idly as such with your pan and later you can cut in to two halves or four, depends on your need, Also heat the kadai and add the oil once heat add the mustard seeds once cracked add the urad dal once it turns to semi brown add the curry leaves and green chilly saute for a minute.
Now add the chopped onion and saute for minute, then add the red chilly powder , turmeric powder and salt, and saute till it cooks it will take less than 7 to 8 minutes, as onion gets cooked easily.(here reserve a tbsp of onion which is required while garnishing the dahi idly). Then add the mini idly, and saute for a minute ,then off the flame. make sure the idly is well coated with onion mixture. stir then and there.
Mean while take a cup add the thick curd and whisk well , make sure no lumps, then add the thin curd and whisk well, Now you can see the semi thick curd. Now take a bowl and add the idly mixture then pour the required amt of curd on the top . wait till it goes down, Then again pour the curd on the top. Wait for 5 minutes, so the idly soaked in the curd well.
while serving garnish with some coriander leaves and reserved fried onions. also u can top up with Boondhi or sev.
- Adding red chilly is an optional, because if u do not want the spice, u can avoid this and add the green chilly.
- Adjust the curd consistency, I want it semi thick so i mixed the thick and thin , So plan it for yourself,
- Soaking is very important, so leave the mixture for 5 minutes.
