Varan Bhaat Recipe with step by step photos and detailed explanation :
Varan Bhaat is an easy dal recipe, which is prepared during the occasion of festivals like ganesh chathurthi in maharashtra. Varan bhaat is served as naivedyam to lord ganesha. If you are in vrat of no onion or no garlic food, then this recipe is apt to have. varan stands for lentil gravy or stew, bhaat stands for Rice, its also called as DAL RICE. This dal is served along with Steamed Rice, very comforting food. It does have many variations few add onion, garlic, tomato. I wanted it plain so opted my way. My amma who is in mumbai, asked me to try this varan bhaat recipe, she got this recipe from her near by temple ,they served this recipe along with steam rice, as prashadam. This recipe you can give it for kids too.
If you are tired, long travel not able to make any thing, this easy lentil curry makes perfect menu. it required very minimal ingredients. Even bachelors can try. i always love lentil based gravy, that you can see from my no of dal post. give me a bowl of dal and cup of rice, i never complaints, happily eat .when amma told this recipe, i was saying her, what is there in this recipe, simple food only. she replied me back, just give a try if you love proceed blogging. i underestimate this dal, i have tried many variations in dal , still this simple & flavors from ghee is one of my most favorite dal recipe.Do try and give me the feedback.
Preparation Time : 5 minutes
Cooking Time : 15 minutes
Servings : 3 ppl
- toor dal – 3/4 cup
- turmeric powder – a pinch
- hing – a pinch
- salt – as required
To temper :
- Ghee/ butter – 1 tsp
- jeera – 1 tsp
- curry leaves – few to temper
Wash the dal twice, and pressure cook the dal by adding the enough water, turmeric powder and hing. once cooked mash the dal and add required amt of water as need.
Now temper the dal with the ingredients mention under “To temper” , transfer it to the dal, and boil the dal for 5 minutes.
Serve it with plan rice or phulka. simple yet comforting food
- To boil:
- toor dal - ¾ cup
- turmeric powder - a pinch
- hing - a pinch
- salt - as required
- To temper :

adjust the dal consistency as per need.
I have not added any spices or masala's as i want it plain with mild flavors.
If you are not going to make this on vrat days, you can add n no of garlic to this while boiling or tempering.
Adding ginger gives nice punch to this dal.
You can even add tomato, while boiling or tempering . You can try with your own variations.
For spicy dal add lots of green chilly while tempering.
